(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Trolls have struck the online fundraising page of an Aurora mother who faces a long recovery after being shot in an Aurora carjacking.
The crude, made-up names have been taken off the Go Fund Me page, which is meant to help Kim Weibring. Weibring was shot in the back outside a Wendy's restaurant in Aurora and may face a lifetime of paralysis.
Her friend Megan Nolan started the page to help Weibring and her family. She couldn't believe it, she said, after learning the page had been hit by Internet trolls. Nolan says she later found out they used stolen credit cards to pledge phony contributions.
"To find somebody that is doing something that is not helpful and unkind and the exact opposite of what this whole Go Fund Me is about is hurtful," she said Tuesday.
"My first reaction was to call the Aurora police, and I did," Nolan says. "My second reaction was to contact Go Fund Me.
"And my third reaction was just to kind of understand where this is coming from and why anyone would take the time to do something that is just so unkind."
The page has raised more than $210,000 and has a goal of $347,000.
Weibring's family says she may not regain the use of her legs. She has two children.
Police have not reported any arrests in the carjacking incident.
