(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police on Tuesday announced charges against the Waukegan man accused of infiltrating a police facility while a SWAT training exercise was occurring.
Donald Patrick, 47, faces five felony counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer and three felony counts of burglary.
Patrick allegedly used a fire escape around noon Monday to enter an upper floor of the Homan Square police facility in the 3300 block of West Fillmore as a police training session was in progress. Patrick grabbed firearms on a table and pointed them at officers, police said.
A struggle ensued, and one of the officers opened fire and wounded Patrick, police said.
More than two dozen officers in the training were using guns with non-lethal rounds instead of live bullets, police Supt. David Brown told reporters Monday.
“Live rounds are not in the guns at the time this person retrieves the guns on the table,” Brown said.
It’s unclear whether the specific guns Patrick allegedly pointed at officers had live rounds or non-lethal rounds, and Brown wouldn’t clarify when pressed.
There is video evidence of Patrick entering the facility but not of the shooting, Brown said.
Patrick's injuries are non-life-threatening, police said.
He is expected to appear in bond court Wednesday.
