When you turn 102 you can do what you want, and eat whatever you want.
That was the sentiment at the McDonald's at Chicago's Navy Pier on Monday where family and friends of Mary Smeltzer gathered for what has now become an annual tradition, celebrating Mrs. Smeltzer's birthday at that McDonald's, where she also celebrated turning 100 and 101.
Mary's daughter, Carolyn Hope Smeltzer, told WBBM her mother's birthday "...is tomorrow (Tuesday) but the party is today. She'll have a different party tomorrow. She gets two parties for being 102!"
Carolyn Hope Smeltzer says of her mother, "I've got pictures of her at this McDonald's just this week! She comes at least twice a week! If you're 102 you can eat whatever you want! On top of that she's been doing it for a long time, along with Snicker's and Fannie May. Everything Chicago!"
Rose Funkhouser and her family own the McDonald's and told WBBM that Mary "really attributes her longevity to eating at McDonald's. We love Mary and all of her friends."
A birthday cake was brought out for Mary Smeltzer, and her friends and family sang "Happy Birthday" and she blew out the candles, celebrating more than a century of happiness, and a healthy appetite.
