PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Elementary school students in the south suburbs have been learning life saving techniques Wednesday as part of Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart's Summer Leadership Academy.

A couple dozen kids at Shepherd High School in Palos Heights were getting training in CPR from officers. Cook County Sheriff Sergeant Denise Regovic was instructing Rayquan Miller, 12.

"Well they just proved every single one of them can do a correct progression and they can absolutely do hands only CPR and save a life," she said.

Miller said these skills are something he would remember for the rest of his life.

"This gives them a little bit of confidence and some tools if God forbid they have to use them," said Tisa Morris, Director of Community Engagement at Cook County Sheriff's Office.

Kids in the program learn a number of life skills and they take part in other activities, including a trip to the Goodman Theater.
