Zion woman struck by stray bullet inside home dies

ZION, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police in the northern suburbs are trying to figure out who fired the apparent stray bullet that left a 23-year-old woman dead.

According to Zion police, 23-year-old Melanie Yates was sitting in her home in the 2800 block of Enoch, in Zion, Sunday night when someone began shooting a gun outside. Police believe one of those bullets crashed into the home and hit Yates in the head.

Police do not believe she was the target.

Yates was transported to an area hospital with extremely critical injuries and despite medical treatment was pronounced dead Monday morning, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary examination results indicate that Yates died from gunshot wound of the head.

Due to the nature of the incident, the Zion Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. Members of the Task Force continue investigating along with Zion Police Detectives.
