PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) -- With the rain (hopefully) gone and the sun out, it is time for our skin to get covered up, daily, with sunscreen.

And while protecting our skin is essential, the chemicals in sunscreen are causing issues to the environment, especially when you are on vacation at the beach.

Chemicals in sun screens like oxybenzone and octinoxate are damaging marine life.

According to National Geographic, reports suggest that 14,000 tons of sunscreen are thought to wash into the water each year.
The issue has become so extreme that Hawaii, Key West, and Palau have passed a bill banning sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate be sold in stores.

Companies are now following this trend by making sunscreens that are “reef-safe.”
