NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — As if getting a COVID-19 test wasn’t difficult enough, Walmart and Kroger just increased prices for the popular BinaxNOW COVID-19 at-home test kit after a price agreement with the White House expired.

The kit now costs $19.88 at Walmart and $23.99 at Kroger, up from their previous low of $14.
In September, the White House announced the test kit deal that offered customers a discount of up to 35%. Though the arrangement concluded in December, both retailers maintained the lower price of the tests into January, with the change taking place on Tuesday.
Amazon also offered a reduced price for the test kits but they are currently unavailable on their website. The retailer has not said whether they will follow the lead of Walmart and Kroger with upping the cost.
With the increased spread of omicron, testing sites have seen increased demand and at-home tests have become more scarce to the point that some stores and pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens announced they’d limit sales of at-home kits.
In December, President Joe Biden announced plans to provide 500 million free rapid home-testing kits to combat the omicron surge by January.
