With many changes to the new tax code, scammers are expected to flood consumers with phony messages this tax season.

Jordan Wright with the Better Business Bureau’s Tip-Off to the Rip-Off® on WBBM Newsradio has the scoop.

Tax season opens next week, so be alert for fake calls, emails, and texts from fraudsters looking to cash in. Scammers can steal your identity, take your money, and even file your tax return before you do.

Many impersonate government agencies, using threats that you’re in trouble with the IRS or promising larger refunds. Others claim your money is ready but demand personal information first.

As you file your 2025 taxes before April 15th, remember: never share your banking details or Social Security number with anyone before contacting the IRS directly to verify the message.
