On Friday, an officer in Washington state who was attempting to arrest a rape suspect was stabbed in the head, police shared. The suspect was later shot and killed by police.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department tweeted a press release about the incident and what led to the stabbing.
“Both Detectives are okay. When trying to apprehend the suspect a Centralia Officer was stabbed and another shooting occurred,” the department wrote. “The suspect is deceased. The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating both shootings.”
Two detectives from the Peirce County Sheriff’s office were reportedly attempting to arrest a 32-year-old man for investigation of second-degree child rape, according to the release.
When the officers were approaching the residence, the man reportedly appeared to reach for a weapon, the release said. It was then that a Pierce County deputy fired a gun, and the man ran off at around 10:15 a.m.
The two detectives called in the shots fired and requested assistance, to which the Centralia Police department responded.
The man was located just after 12 p.m. by a K9 unit, and while a Centralia Police Officer was attempting to make contact with him, the man stabbed the officer in the head and back.
According to the sheriff’s office, it was then that officers from the Centralia Police Department shot and killed the man.
The officer who was stabbed is in stable condition after he was taken to an area hospital for surgery.
An investigation into the incident and the officer-involved shooting is ongoing.
