SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A story not often told is getting the documentary treatment.
It's a known fact that the Old State Capitol is where Abraham Lincoln gave his “House Divided” speech, but not many people are aware that in the 1960’s, the building was dismantled brick by brick, then reassembled after an underground parking garage was dug.
“History Reborn” is the name of the documentary about the big project, and Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau director Scott Dahl said the attention - and ongoing projects around downtown - is most welcome.
“The renovations at the Old State Capitol will be completed, the renovations at the (current) State Capitol will be completed, and (a new downtown) transportation hub opening in 2025, all ahead of what we believe will be a record tourism year in 2026," Dahl said.
"With the 100th anniversary of Route 66, the nation’s 250th birthday, and North America hosting the World Cup-all these projects will be completed, and Springfield and our downtown will look amazing.”
The documentary, presented by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the local economic development agency, has a private premiere Thursday night in downtown Springfield.
