A clerk working at an Arizona gas station managed to turn the tables on an armed robber, putting the thief in a hospital and potentially saving a customer's life.

The incident occurred Wednesday at a Chevron station in Avondale, just east of Phoenix, where a masked man stormed in with a gun in his hand.

"The moment he pointed the gun at me, it was pretty obvious what he was there for," the clerk, identified only as Brian, told KSAZ.

Brian said the armed assailant mumbled the words "rob" and money." However, when the robber turned his attention to one of the store's customers, Brian seized the opportunity to jump into action and shot the man.

"The suspect became distracted by another person in the store and the store employee took the opportunity to pull out and use his own firearm, shooting and injuring the suspect," Avondale Police said in a statement to the station.

The suspect, who hasn't been identified, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Investigators are now reviewing security footage before determining what charges to file.

Brian is not expected to face any charges.

"I'm not happy I had to shoot him, but I'm not stressing," he told KPNX. "The moment he pulled the gun on me he set the situation and I just followed it. He made the situation what it was."
