Former President Donald Trump is currently sitting in a heap of legal fees after he was ordered to pay nearly $355 million in penalties in a civil fraud case. But now, his supporters are looking to pitch in, starting a GoFundMe to help pay the bill.
As of Sunday afternoon, more than 6,500 donors had raised over $295,000 to help Trump with his legal bills, which are continuing to grow as he faces four criminal indictments.
He was also ordered to pay writer E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million after he was found to have defamed her by a judge last month.
As for the New York civil fraud case, the New York attorney general’s office shared that while he was assessed $355 million in penalties, he and his business could pay more than $450 million with interest.
The GoFundMe was started by Elena Cardone, the wife of entrepreneur and investor Grant Cardone, and is looking to raise the entirety of the fees levied against Trump by Judge Arthur Engoron.
On the page, Cardone shared that the purpose of the GoFundMe is to show support for Trump in what she said was political persecution.
“I stand unwaveringly with President Donald Trump in the face of what I see as unprecedented and unfair treatment by certain judicial elements in New York,” Cardone wrote. “The recent legal battles he faces are not just an attack on him, but an attack on the very ideals of fairness and due process that every American deserves.”
On Friday, Trump’s attorneys said the verdict was a “politically fueled witch hunt” and that it would be appealed by the former president soon.
