For better or worse, the Twitter experience regular users have become accustomed to might be changing if billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk has anything to say about it. And very soon, he just might.
After buying a 9.2% stake in the social media giant, Musk will be joining the company’s board, an announcement that caused a 2% bump in Twitter’s shares Tuesday.
Through conversations with Elon in recent weeks, it became clear to us that he would bring great value to our Board,” CEO Parag Agrawal announced, fittingly, in a tweet. “He’s both a passionate believer and intense critic of the service which is exactly what we need on Twitter, and in the boardroom, to make us stronger in the long-term.”
The company’s filing with the SEC reveals that Musk’s term on the board runs until 2024.
The outspoken entrepreneur sent his own tweet after the announcement was made, saying he already has ideas on how to tweak the user experience of the social media app.
“Looking forward to working with Parag & Twitter board to make significant improvements to Twitter in coming months!” Musk tweeted.
He’s jumping right in with both feet apparently, already polling Twitter users whether they would like the addition of an “edit” button that would allow them to change tweets they’ve sent. Editing a tweet has never been allowed up to this point in the company’s history.
In retweeting Musk’s poll, Agrawal cautioned that people should “vote carefully,” suggesting the results could hold a lot of weight moving forward.
