Senator Josh Hawley says the old Republican Party "is dead."

The Republican from Missouri made the remark following the GOP's significant underperformance in the midterm elections.

"The old party is dead. Time to bury it. Build something new," Hawley tweeted on Saturday.

Hawley's comment came the same day the balance of power in the Senate was solidified, after Democratic candidate Catherine Cortez Masto announced victory against former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt.

For months prior to election day, political analysts and experts predicted that Republicans would take control of Congress with ease in a so-called "red wave." At one point, Republicans were predicted to have a 57.2% chance of grabbing the Senate in this year's midterms.

The red wave never materialized, as races were much closer than expected.

In Pennsylvania, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman took down Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz; in New Hampshire, Democrat Maggie Hassan took down GOP challenger Donald Bolduc; and in Colorado, Michael Bennet beat out Republican Joe O’Dea.

While ballots in key races are still being counted, the GOP is projected to win the House majority. The contest for the House could last well into this coming week or longer if control ends up hinging on only one or two uncalled races, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Republicans have won 211 of the 218 seats they’d need to take the majority, according to CNN projections, while Democrats have won 204, with 20 seats still undecided as of Saturday evening.

Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., who is running against Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., to be majority whip for Republicans in the House, told Fox News Sunday that the GOP has "a lot of unpacking" to do on the election outcome.

"Did we have the wrong strategy? Why did our message not break through? Why did the voters not buy into the vision and the message that Republicans were selling," he said, while predicting that Republicans will win the majority in the House. "It will be a very slim majority but we have an an opportunity over the next two years to be the last line of defense to block the Biden agenda."
