As Chicagoland springs into landscaping mode, fraudsters are hoping to see a lot of green, too – by planting a fresh crop of lawn and garden scams. Jay Elliott with the Better Business Bureau’s Tip-Off to the Rip-Off® on WBBM Newsradio has the details.

As annual yard and garden projects begin to take root, watch for red flags before scams start popping up like weeds.

Be wary of landscapers who demand full payment upfront for a season of lawn care. You could end up paying for work that’s never done, either because the business is substandard or the person is an imposter.

Also be cautious of unsolicited calls or door-to-door offers that use high-pressure sales tactics.

And before you invest in expensive shrubs, trees, landscaping, or irrigation, research the business and ask for references.
