On the front lines and in the trenches of World War I, around 250 women called “dough lassies” from the Salvation Army arrived to support U.S. soldiers with clothes, supplies and donuts.

Since 1938, their effort has been honored every year during National Donut Day on the first Friday of June. Celebrating is easy – all you need to do is eat a donut, or a few.
