A local donut shop was on the brink of having to close its doors after it was robbed last Thursday in Newark, Texas. But now, thanks to the community’s support, the Donut King is staying open.
Last Thursday, the owners of Donut King, which had recently reopened after a neighboring building suffered a fire, were met by early morning robbers, according to Jason Blount, the owner of LocalCraft BBQ.
Blount shared that while they think the robbers were unarmed, it didn’t stop them from taking advantage of the older couple that owns the donut shop.
“They’re an elderly couple, and they work very, very hard,” Blount said. “And, I’m sure it didn’t take much to intimidate them, to allow that to happen.”
Deciding to take action, Blount took to social media to share what had happened and issued one message to those in town ahead of National Donut Day, “Buy them out and tip big!”
“And it all started with a quick little Facebook post that I put up the night before. A quick little post. ‘Hey, I hope you guys are hungry for donuts in the morning because we need to sell these guys out. We need to show them some small-town love,’” Blount said. “And man, they came through huge. The line was out the door all day, and I think they were sold out by 9:30 in the morning.”
Friday was a record-setting day for Donut King as those across Wise County and the neighboring towns of Boyd, Aurora, and Rhone were rallying around the owners of the local donut shop.
