Phoenix, Ariz., is known for its desert preserves, hiking trails and beautiful weather. However, this year had been colder than usual in the nation’s sixth largest city.

According to the National Weather Service, the average temperature for the first three months of 2023 has been the coolest in 25 years.

“Been feeling cool to you so far this year? Well the average temperature for the first 3 months of 2023, 57.6 degrees, is the coolest since 57.6 degrees back in 1998,” said the service in a Saturday tweet. “It is the coolest of the 2000s by 1.1 degrees over the 58.7 degrees in 2019.”

On Sunday, the NWS estimated that Tuesday would have some of the coldest temperatures in the region until November. On Monday, it reported that the low temperature Phoenix was 54 degrees, four degrees below normal.

In addition to cooler-than-usual temperatures, wind and dust storms have hit Phoenix this week.

“Wind Advisories are in effect across the region today as strong winds ramp up through the day,” said a Monday tweet. “With these winds will come the potential for some localized blowing dust. Much warmer temperatures are then expected by the end of the week.”

While the NWS said that the temperature had climbed up to a normal range later Monday, by Tuesday it reported that a cold front was moving in.

“Much cooler temperatures settling into the area today, with breezy to windy conditions developing again by this afternoon and lasting into the evening hours,” the NWS tweeted Tuesday. It also said the low temperature this morning at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport was 47 degrees – 11 degrees below normal.

Further into the week temperatures will begin to rise, according to the weather service. High temperatures will be into the 90s Sunday.

Other areas in the Southwest have had chillier-than-usual winters in recent years, with Texas suffering through a brutal winter in February 2021. According to the NOAA, that February was the coldest in the U.S. in 30 years.
