Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia, says she will resign from Congress effective Jan. 5, 2026.
Greene announced the decision Friday, citing what she described as a breakdown in trust and support within her party and a desire not to put her district through a damaging primary fight. Her decision comes after a public split with former President Donald Trump, who withdrew his endorsement of her and signaled intent to back a primary challenger.
Greene first won election in 2020 as a vocal supporter of the “Make America Great Again” movement and quickly became a controversial figure for her embrace of conspiracy theories and combative style.
In recent months she diverged from Trump on issues including the public release of files from the Jeffrey Epstein case and foreign policy decisions, which analysts say contributed to the erosion of her standing within GOP leadership.
Her resignation sets up a special election in Georgia’s 14th congressional district next year to fill her seat.
