The Phoenix Police Department responded to a call of a student with a gun on campus last Friday. The department says that the high school student, who allegedly brought an AR-15 and ammunition to the school, now faces a “number of serious felony charges.”

The Phoenix Union High School District shared in a statement to CNN that school administrators contacted the authorities after learning about the possible weapon being present at Bostrom High School just after 1 p.m. on Friday.

“During our investigation, we discovered the report was accurate, and local authorities intervened and confiscated the weapon,” the school district said in an email.

When officers arrived on campus, they found the male juvenile and detained him in the main office of the high school, the department shared.

In order to ensure the safety of those present, the department shared that its officers “acted quickly,” arresting the student who was found with additional ammunition in his lunchbox and backpack.

The identity of the student has not been released by the department, citing that he is a minor.

While police were investigating the situation, school administrators placed the campus on lockdown, the district shared.

“We commend those who originally reported the possibility of a weapon on school grounds to adults on campus who immediately called police,” police said in the statement.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing with the assistance of the Phoenix Police Department’s Crime Gun Intelligence Unit, the department shared. Police are also working closely with the school and district officials.

The department has not shared where the gun came from or why the student allegedly brought it on campus.
