For football fans, advertisements that run during the game might just be something they pass by while grabbing a beer. However, since more than half of the nation watches the most popular U.S. sporting event, it is sought after by brands looking to reach customers.

It’s so sought after that for the second consecutive year, the average cost of a 30-second ad spot during the big game was $7 million, according to The New York Times.

Last year, an estimated 200 million people tuned into the Super Bowl, per the NFL. That’s about 60% of all people in the entire country. This year the defending champion team, the Kansas City Chiefs, will play the San Francisco 49ers.

“The Super Bowl is singular across the television and media landscape not only in its unparalleled viewership, but because it is largely watched in group settings,” said Paul Ballew, Chief Data and Analytics Officer of the NFL.

Some of the people in those groups even watch the game specifically for the commercials. In fact, AP-NORC polling released this week found that 22% of adults were extremely excited for the commercials – close to the 25% who were extremely excited about the game itself.
