Republican Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.) has officially dropped out of the 2024 GOP primary, noting that he has heard what voters have to say and that right now isn’t his time.
Scott shared the news while speaking with Fox News’ “Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy.”
“I love America more today than I did on May 22nd, but when I go back to Iowa, it will not be as a presidential candidate. I am suspending my campaign,” Scott told Gowdy. “I think the voters, who are the most remarkable people on the planet, have been really clear that they’re telling me, Not now, Tim.”
Scott is the latest to drop out of the race, with his decision coming weeks after former Vice President Mike Pence decided to do the same.
In a fundraising email sent minutes before he made the announcement, Scott’s campaign gave donors “one last chance to donate this weekend and help Tim reach his campaign goal.”
Left in the GOP field is former President Donald Trump, who continues to control a demanding lead in the polls, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamay, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
Scott launched his campaign in May 2022, looking to appeal to voters in a positive and optimistic way, a change in pace from Trump’s scorched Earth campaign style.
After the third presidential debate, which took place last Wednesday, Scott decided that this wasn’t the moment for him and officially stepped out of the race.
