Former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James on Monday, hoping to put a stop to the long-running investigation by her office into his company's business.

The lawsuit was filed in Albany, NY on behalf of Trump and his company, and claims that James' involvement has been politically motivated.

“Her mission is guided solely by political animus and a desire to harass, intimidate, and retaliate against a private citizen who she views as a political opponent,” the lawsuit says.

Trump's lawsuit comes two weeks after James said she would try to question him under oath next month. She responded to the suit and accused him of trying to delay the current investigation.

"To be clear, neither Mr. Trump nor the Trump Organization get to dictate if and where they will answer for their actions," James said. "Our investigation will continue undeterred because no one is above the law, not even someone with the name Trump.”

On the same day James requested Trump to speak under oath, she withdrew her name from the New York Governor race.

“I have come to the conclusion that I must continue my work as attorney general,” James said. “There are a number of important investigations and cases that are underway, and I intend to finish the job.”

The suit seeks a court order to declare that Trump's rights have been violated and to stop the investigation, according to The New York Times. His lawyers also said that they hope to get rid of the subpoena, and are expected to do so in the coming days.

James could file a lawsuit against him if they were to find evidence of wrongdoing, but because it is a civil inquiry, she could not file criminal charges. Her civil investigation into Trump's business began in March 2019.
