Lifeguards in Los Angeles County are being hailed as heroes for saving a dog that got a little too excited while swimming and ended up more than 600 yards away from the shore in Malibu.

"Not your everyday ocean rescue, but we were sure happy to help this 4 legged friend make its way back to the beach," the department wrote on Twitter Monday.

The lifeguards launched a rescue watercraft from Zuma Beach after receiving a report of a dog that was pulled nearly 2,000 feet from shore while swimming off a small cove near Nicolas State Beach.

Lifeguards quickly located the dog and secured the animal on a rescue sled, then transported it back to the beach.

The lifeguards returned to cheers and clapping as they pulled up on the shore with the big, brown dog. The animal's owner threw her arms around the rescuers while expressing her gratitude.

The dog seemed to be unphased by the entire ordeal and was happily wagging its tail upon being reunited with its owner.

Although the situation had a happy resolution, authorities used the moment to share a reminder with dog owners.

"While rescues like this one sure put a smile on our face, Lifeguards would like to remind beachgoers that dogs are not allowed on LA County Beaches," the department said.
