A woman in Washington City, Utah was arrested on Saturday after she allegedly hit and killed two bicyclists with her car and then drove off, according to police records obtained by KUTV.
The suspect, Julie Ann Budge, 47, said that her irritable bowel syndrome was the cause of the accident.
She reportedly told police that because of her IBS, she "began to uncontrollably defecate on herself while driving, so she swerved."
The two men riding their bicycles were brothers from California who were competing in a race in the town in Utah, according to the police affidavit.
A witness at the scene of the accident said that the men were riding in the bike lane and a Hyundai Genesis swerved and hit them. Other witnesses attempted to save the men's lives, but they remained unresponsive, and were taken to St. George Regional Hospital.
They were later pronounced dead at the hospital, and their identities have remained private.
Budge reportedly told police officers that she had been taking medication for her IBS, but said she knew she hit the bicyclists and couldn't stop the car.
She also told police that she was in a hospital the previous day, and was allegedly taking Fentanyl through an IV drip.
Budge then failed all field sobriety tests, and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the police report.
She faces two second-degree felonies for suspicion of automobile homicide due to criminal negligence, two third-degree felonies for failure to remain at an accident involving death, and two other third-degree felonies for DUI with serious bodily injury by negligent operation.
Budge is currently in jail and is being held without bail, according to KSTU.
