American film director, writer, actor, and comedian Woody Allen has announced that following his 50th film, he will retire from filmmaking, marking the end of a decades-long film career.
Allen shared the news of his retirement while working on his final film in Europe. During an interview with La Vanguardia, a Spanish newspaper, he shared that he planned on retiring from making movies and instead focusing on writing.
The director has worked on several projects, including films such as “Antz,” “Midnight in Paris,” and “Annie Hall” while winning numerous awards throughout his decades of work in the film industry.
What will now be Allen’s last project was described by the 86-year-old as “exciting, dramatic and also very sinister.” He compared it to the movie “Match Point.” The film is being shot entirely in Europe and fully in French.
Allen has been spending his time filmmaking mainly across the pond in Europe after his popularity dipped due to abuse accusations surrounding his daughter Dylan Farrow.
His project “A Rainy Day in New York” was shelved by Amazon Studios after he was accused of “sabotaging” the film by his comments about the abuse accusations. The move resulted in a lawsuit alleging Amazon breached contract, but the dispute was settled out of court.
