Medical facilities and emergency rooms nationwide have seen an increase in adolescents and teens being hospitalized for suicide attempts, especially in girls.
In fact, girls accounted for 66% of all underage suicide attempt hospitalizations from 2016 to 2021, according to a new study published by JAMA Network Open on Wednesday.
The average age of the patients was 15.
The study also showed that there was a seasonal component to the increases with attempts going up by 15% in April and 24% in October as opposed to January, leading researchers to conclude that the academic calendar has an impact on the mental health of American youths.
The JAMA report isn’t the only one showing mental health difficulties are rising for American kids.
A survey conducted in 2021 by the CDC showed that almost 57% of teen girls in the U.S. reported feeling “persistently sad or hopeless,” with 22% of all teens answering that they had seriously considered killing themselves.
