A retired farmer from Kansas made quite the impression on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo this week.
On Friday, Gov. Cuomo shared a handwritten letter he received from a retired farmer named Dennis, who also sent an unused N95 mask to be given to a doctor or nurse in New York.
The state has been labeled the epicenter of the pandemic with over 270,000 cases and 16,000 deaths, according to numbers from Gov. Cuomo.
The governor of the Empire State shared the letter on social media in which Dennis explained his wife, Sharon, was sick with the virus and they wanted to help in anyway they could.
“I'm a retired farmer hunkered down in N.E. Kansas with my wife who has but one lung and occasional problems with her remaining lung. She also has diabetes. We are in our 70s now and frankly I am afraid for her," the retiree wrote.
While Dennis wrote that he thought the governor would never read the letter, Cuomo did, and decided to share it with the world for “inspiration.
“This is humanity at its best,” the governor wrote on social media.
The governor displayed the mask given to him by Dennis during his daily press briefing on Friday while speaking highly of the act of kindness.
“It's that love, that courage, that generosity of spirit that makes this country so beautiful,” Cuomo said.
He said people like Dennis and his wife make up for “all the ugliness” amid the pandemic.
