Given his knowledge of the Cowboys organization and offensive system, Morris was set to share carries with rookie running back Tony Pollard before the Ezekiel Elliott situation was resolved.
Following the Elliott extension and the signing of Jordan Chunn last week, however, the Cowboys were carrying four running backs and were forced to make a tough decision on who to release.
Due to Chunn's ability to contribute on special teams, he held the edge over Morris in the eyes of the Cowboys front office, resulting in Morris's release from the organization.
The 30-year-old Morris, who spent most of his career in Washington, filled in nicely when called upon in Dallas, rushing the ball 184 times for 790 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 4.3 yards per carry in 28 games, that included five starts with the Cowboys.
