As training camp begins, Bears still evaluating pass rusher market

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) -- Bears general manager Ryan Poles recognizes the need to solidify the team’s pass rush. But it’s not quite clear how that plan could come to fruition.

The Bears are still exploring the market for free-agent pass rushers and potential trade possibilities. Former Pro Bowl defensive end Yannick Ngakoue is considered the top player available at his position.

"Obviously, there’s no certainty,” Poles said. “It takes two to make sure it works out. So, there's a level of patience that comes with it. There’s no guarantee."

The Bears last season were led in sacks by safety Jaquan Brisker. Linebacker Roquan Smith, who was traded in late October, was tied for second with two sacks.

Ngakoue, 28, posted 9.5 sacks last season with the Colts. He has posted no fewer than eight sacks over seven NFL seasons. Ngakoue has interest in signing with the Bears, according to multiple sources. He is seeking a multi-year deal having played with four different teams over the last three seasons.

The Bears could potentially find a significant upgrade for their pass rush in Commanders defensive end Chase Young. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Young’s fifth-year option was declined this offseason in Washington. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

The Bears signed veteran free-agent pass rusher DeMarcus Walker on a three-year deal this offseason. They will also lean on second-year player Dominique Robinson and fourth-year player Trevis Gipson as part of their rotation.

As the Bears begin their training camp at Halas Hall, Poles is preparing to keep evaluating the market for pass rushers.

“If not, I’m happy about the guys that are here,” Poles said. “Walker has done a great job. Robinson is coming along. Gipson is coming along. So, I’m happy with the guys that are here, but obviously, we’re going to look to improve if we can. If it works out, we’ll attack it.”
