Bears name 5 captains for 2025 season

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) -- The Bears have named five team captains for this season and will feature one selected weekly captain, head coach Ben Johnson said Tuesday.

The Bears’ five captains will be quarterback Caleb Williams, left guard Joe Thuney, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, safety Kevin Byard and kicker Cairo Santos. Johnson indicated his preference is for two captains on offense and defense while one will represent special teams.

Williams and Byard are returning captains from last season, while Thuney and Jarrett – both captains in previous stops – are each new to Chicago this season. Santos is a first-time captain with the Bears.

Last season, the Bears’ captaincy drew criticism as eight players – more than 15% of the 53-man roster – represented as captains during a tumultuous season.

Five players returning from last season – tight end Cole Kmet, wide receiver DJ Moore, cornerback Jaylon Johnson, linebacker T.J. Edwards and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds – are no longer captains in 2025.

The Bears kick off the 2025 campaign Monday night when they host the Vikings at Soldier Field.
