LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) -- Bears rookie receiver Dazz Newsome suffered a shoulder injury while falling awkwardly in practice Tuesday and is expected to be "out for a little while," coach Matt Nagy said.

Newsome suffered the injury while landing as he went to catch a pass during the Bears' first practice of OTAs on Tuesday. Newsome was wearing a sling while watching practice Wednesday.

A sixth-round pick out of North Carolina, Newsome is expected to compete for a role in the Bears' receiving group.

The Bears on Wednesday practiced without a handful of key veterans. Edge rusher Khalil Mack, defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, safety Eddie Jackson, receiver Allen Robinson and nose tackle Eddie Goldman were among those who weren't practicing. Players aren't required to participate in OTAs.

The Bears already limited their offseason program by eliminating a set of practices last week, a gesture toward the players amid prior calls from the union for players to sit out of voluntary practices. The Bears will hold their mandatory three-day minicamp later in June.
