David Montgomery: Justin Fields is 'commanding' Bears to be better

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) -- During his four seasons with the Bears, running back David Montgomery has felt the brunt of his team's offensive struggles, particularly due to the constant instability at quarterback. That has now begun to change.

Montgomery believes in Bears second-year quarterback Justin Fields, who has enjoyed a run of record-breaking success in recent weeks. The 23-year-old Fields has reset franchise and NFL rushing marks for a quarterback while growing with the entire offense.

"He's commanding everybody around him to take their game, their level of play, how they practice to his level," Montgomery said. "That's what you need in a quarterback. He's doing a really great job. I'm lucky to have him as my quarterback."

The No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields is the fifth quarterback that Montgomery has taken handoffs from in his young career.

Fields has completed 58.9% of his passes for 1,489 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 games this season. He's also the team's leading runner, guiding the league's top-ranked rushing offense with 104 carries for 749 yards and six scores on the ground.

The Bears are the first team in NFL history to rush for more than 225 yards in five consecutive games and are on pace to compile more than 3,400 rushing yards for the season, which would be an NFL record, albeit by surpassing a 16-game record in a 17-game campaign.

The Bears (3-7) visit the Falcons (4-6) on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
