WESTFIELD, Ind. (670 The Score) — Bears quarterback Justin Fields will sit out when Chicago plays its preseason game at the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday, coach Matt Eberflus said Thursday evening.
The Bears will hold out Fields and select starters, with Eberflus citing the quality of work from joint practices with the Colts on Wednesday and Thursday at Grand Park as the reason for those players sitting out.
“I thought it was great competition throughout the course of the last two days,” Eberflus said after practice Thursday.
Fields played the Bears’ preseason opener last Saturday at Soldier Field, finishing 3-of-3 for 129 yards and two touchdowns on seven snaps. In 2022, Fields played nine snaps in Chicago’s second preseason game.
The Bears didn't hold joint practices with another team last preseason. During practices with the Colts this week, Fields and Chicago's starting offense faced off in drills against Indianapolis’ first-team defense.
Eberflus didn't share which other starters won't play Saturday. Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, receiver Chase Claypool, safety Eddie Jackson and safety Jaquan Brisker were among the starters who didn't practice Thursday. Center Cody Whitehair left practice with an apparent finger/hand injury.
The Bears and Colts kick off at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
