Report: Patriots assistant Jerod Mayo expected to be in mix for Bears' coaching job

(WEEI) By this time next week, it's likely a few NFL head coaching jobs will be available.

Assuming Matt Nagy is let go by the Bears, Chicago will be one of them -- and a Patriots assistant coach is expected to be in the mix.

Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo and Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus are two of "a few younger candidates that project as leaders" who will be in the mix, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported.

Mayo, 35, became a coach in 2019. After just two seasons, he received his first head coaching interview last offseason when he met with the Eagles.

Although Mayo is a terrific leader, it would be a big jump going from inside linebackers coach to NFL head coach. Mayo played for the Patriots from 2008-'15, going to the Pro Bowl twice and receiving first-team All-Pro honors once.
