(670 The Score) The Bears will release veteran defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr., NFL Media reported Tuesday.

Edwards, 28, played two seasons with the Bears, recording six sacks across 27 games. He had been competing for a rotational role on Chicago's defensive line.

The Bears will also release veteran guard Michael Schofield, NFL Media reported. The 31-year-old Schofield signed with Chicago just prior to the start training camp and spent time working with the first-team offensive line at right guard. However, the emergence of second-year offensive lineman Teven Jenkins at right guard made Schofield expendable. Rather than keeping Schofield for depth, the Bears chose to release him.

The Bears have informed a number of other players they're being cut as well, according to multiple reports: defensive lineman Trevon Coley, running back De'Montre Tuggle, quarterback Nathan Peterman, defensive lineman Sam Kamara, cornerback Greg Stroman, linebacker DeMarquis Gates, wide receiver Chris Finke, offensive lineman Lachavious Simmons, wide receiver Isaiah Coulter, cornerback Davontae Harris, safety A.J Thomas, wide receiver Nsimba Webster and tight end Chase Allen.

The Bears must set their initial 53-man roster by 3 p.m. CT Tuesday.
