(Audacy) Thursday Night Football once again featured a pair of teams with losing records in Week 6, and Hall of Famer-turned-analyst Tony Gonzalez didn't mince words in his assessment of the struggling franchises.
After dubbing the Commanders and Bears as the "JV teams of the NFL" during Amazon Prime Video's pregame show, Gonzalez doubled down with an even harsher assessment during halftime after a lackluster first half.
"I need to take that back," Gonzalez said of his original JV dig. "These are the freshman teams."
Washington held a slim 3-0 lead at halftime en route to an eventual 12-7 victory.
The Bears had at least two golden scoring opportunities in the first half, twice marching the ball deep into Commanders territory before those drives fizzled.
On the first, Chicago quarterback Justin Fields threw an interception that bounced high in the air off the helmet of Commanders defensive tackle Efe Obada before it came down in the arms of defensive lineman Jonathan Allen.
The second scoring chance ended with Washington's defensive front stuffing Chicago running back Khalil Herbert on fourth down at the one-yard line.
While the Bears did manage to produce a couple explosive offensive plays during the game -- including a 64-yard jaunt by Herbert and a sweet 40-yard passing strike from Fields to receiver Dante Pettis for a touchdown -- Gonzalez, the former Chiefs and Falcons standout tight end, had apparently seen enough by game's end to declare that Chicago wasn't properly tapping the talents of Fields.
For Thursday Night Football, now in its first season airing on Prime Video, the sleepy affair marked the second in a row after the debacle that was the Colts' 12-9 overtime win against the Broncos in Week 5.
