Lafferty, 27, was acquired by the Blackhawks on Jan. 5 in a deal with the Penguins for forward Alex Nylander. He has five goals and eight assists over 55 games this season. That includes 45 games played in Chicago.

“Sam’s speed and up-tempo style is the brand of hockey we hope to see the team play over the coming years,” Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in a statement. “He has showcased those skills since we acquired him. Sam adds a dynamic to our roster that allows him to fit seamlessly throughout the lineup and give our coaches a reliable forward that can be trusted in nearly every situation.”

Lafferty spent his first three seasons with Pittsburgh.

The Blackhawks (28-42-11) conclude their regular season Friday night when they take on the Sabres in Buffalo.
