(670 The Score) When contract negotiations broke down between beloved color commentator Eddie Olczyk and the Blackhawks, the team began contacting former players to seek their interest in the television analyst job.
With that as context, would Hall of Famer and former Blackhawks defenseman Chris Chelios have any interest in replacing Olczyk in Chicago's broadcast booth? He was asked that Thursday on the Mully & Haugh Show.
“I’m here hopefully for the rest of my life,” Chelios said. “I came back to be a Blackhawk for the rest of my life. If they need me to go in the booth and need some veteran presence I guess I’d call it, I’d be more than happy to do something like that. But nowhere near the talent that Eddie and Pat Foley were. No question, those guys were two of the best.”
A Chicago native, Chelios played with the Blackhawks from 1990-'99. He currently serves as an ambassador with the team. Chelios also served as a studio analyst with ESPN last season.
Olczyk, 55, is joining the Kraken’s broadcast team in Seattle. Foley retired after last season, marking an all-new television broadcast team for the Blackhawks. Chris Vosters was hired to replace Foley as the play-by-play announcer.
The Blackhawks went 28-42-12 last season. The team embarked on a rebuilding process this offseason, which included trading star forward Alex DeBrincat and promising young center Kirby Dach earlier in July to stockpile draft picks.
The Blackhawks could next trade core players Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, the last remaining pieces of their championship teams from 2010, 2013 and 2015.
