(670 The Score) The Bulls’ starting point guard job will be an open competition in training camp, executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas said Wednesday.
Jevon Carter, Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu will compete for the job. The Bulls added Carter on a three-year, $20-million deal in free agency this offseason. They also retained White on a three-year deal worth up to $40 million and kept Dosunmu on a three-year, $21-million contract.
“It’s going to be interesting to see,” Karnisovas said on the Bernstein & Holmes Show. “I think it’s going to be a competition, a fierce competition. There’s going to be a lot of good guards. That’s the mentality going into training camp. We’re looking forward to it.”
Carter, 28, is considered the best defender of the three in the Bulls’ mix. He averaged 8.0 points and 2.4 assists 22.3 minutes across 81 games for the Bucks last season, when he started 39 times and shot 42.1% on 3-pointers.
White, 23, averaged 9.7 points and 2.8 assists in 23.4 minutes across 74 games for the Bulls last season, when he made two starts. He shot 37.2% on 3-pointers and while his scoring average was the lowest of his four-year NBA career, he made notable improvement as an all-around player.
Dosunmu, 23, averaged 8.6 points and 2.6 assists in 26.2 minutes across 80 games for the Bulls last season, when he started 51 times. He struggled with his shot, shooting 31.2% on 3-pointers.
The Bulls will hold media day Monday, then they head to Nashville for training camp for nearly a week before opening preseason action on Oct. 8.
“It’s going to be hard for Billy,” Karnisovas said in reference to coach Billy Donovan’s decision.
