The Bulls will bring back forward Stanley Johnson on a hardship exception, Shams Charania of the Athletic reported Wednesday. The Bulls were eligible to use the hardship exemption – which allows for a 16th player to be on a standard contract on a team’s roster – because four or more players are set to be out for at least three games or more.

On Wednesday morning, reserve guard Matt Thomas became the fourth Bulls players to land in the health and safety protocols as team deals with a COVID-19 outbreak. Star DeMar DeRozan, forward Javonte Green and guard Coby White are also in the health and safety protocols, leaving the Bulls (17-8) really shorthanded as they visit the Cavaliers on Wednesday evening. Second-year forward Patrick Williams has also been sidelined since early in the regular season due to a serious wrist injury.

Johnson, 25, spent training camp and the preseason with the Bulls before being waived in mid-October. He most recently was playing for the South Bay Lakers in the G League. The 6-foot-6 Johnson has averaged 6.2 points per game across his first six NBA seasons.
