(670 The Score) The Cubs made the long-awaited splash signing of their offseason Saturday night.
Third baseman Alex Bregman and the Cubs have agreed to a five-year, $175-million deal, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported. Bregman will give an offense that’s set to lose star right fielder Kyle Tucker a much-needed jolt, as he’ll slot into the middle of the lineup and solidify a third-base position that the club had hoped to get more production from.
Bregman, who will turn 32 in March, hit .273 with 18 homers, 62 RBIs and an .821 OPS in 114 games for the Red Sox last season. He opted out of his contract with the Red Sox after the season. Bregman is a three-time All-Star, including in 2025. He has hit .272 with 209 homers and an .846 OPS in his 10-year MLB career.
Bregman won two World Series (in 2017 and 2022) in his nine-year tenure with the Houston Astros before he joined the Red Sox. The Cubs seriously pursued Bregman in free agency last offseason but were outbid by the Red Sox.
With Bregman in the fold, Cubs infielder Matt Shaw projects to fill a super-utilityman role unless another move is made.
