(670 The Score) When the Cubs made a blockbuster trade in December to acquire star right fielder Kyle Tucker from the Astros, it signaled their intention to win in 2025 while also creating uncertainty for the future.
Tucker, 28, is playing in the final season of his contract and is set to become a free agent in November. The Cubs could conceivably sign him to a long-term extension before he reaches free agency, but the expectation across the industry is that Tucker will play out his final season under contract and test the open market.
In an appearance on the Mully & Haugh Show on Thursday morning, Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins declined to discuss the organization's approach to Tucker's contract situation but shared high praise for him.
“He’s a player you want to build around,” Hawkins said. "He’s absolutely an elite hitter in this league and plays great defense as well. He’s carried our lineup – along with our catchers – over the last couple of weeks. We’ll expect to see that continue through the season. We’re just thrilled to have him on this club.”
Tucker is hitting .322 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in the team's first 15 games this season. The Cubs are 9-6 and lead the NL Central.
After an off day Thursday, the Cubs open a three-game series against the Dodgers on Friday. Pregame coverage will start at 8:35 p.m. on 670 The Score, with first pitch set for 9:10 p.m.
