(670 The Score) The Cubs are doing everything they can to trade outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger this offseason, but they haven’t found any takers.
The Cubs have been offering Bellinger to “anyone and everyone,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Monday, but no opposing teams have expressed serious interest. That’s because the 29-year-old Bellinger’s contract is viewed as onerous. He’s owed $27.5 million in 2025 and $25 million in 2026. Should Bellinger exercise his opt-out clause after the 2025 season, he’d land a $5-million buyout while hitting free agency.
Bellinger’s production in 2024 didn’t match his lucrative contract, as he hit .266 with 18 homers, 78 RBIs and a .751 OPS in 130 games. He had a big 2023 season, with 26 homers and an .881 OPS. The Cubs’ hope, if they keep him, is that he regains that type of form.
If the Cubs did trade Bellinger, they’d likely have to eat some of his money or take on another cumbersome contract, Nightengale reported.
