That is a credit to Cubs manager Craig Counsell, who has weathered the storm to place the Cubs firmly in the playoff picture. Veteran second baseman Nico Hoerner lauded the work of Counsell this season.
“Knowing that there isn’t like a picture-perfect way to get through every baseball game right now, but he’s still finding ways to put people in positions to succeed,” Hoerner said Tuesday with the Spiegel & Holmes Show. “So, that’s so impressive on that end. But I think the flip side of that too is the trust that he puts into us as position players, I think, through times that we haven't played well or times that we have, he always gives us the benefit of the doubt as a group to put our best foot forward and figure things out on our own. Knowing that it has to come from players at a certain point but putting us in positions to succeed.”
Counsell is managing his third year with the Cubs. He landed in Chicago back in November of 2023 on a five-year contract worth $40 million.
