(670 The Score) Cubs outfielder Ian Happ’s optimism about returning to action this weekend was short-lived.
The Cubs on Friday placed Happ on the 10-day injured list as he deals with a rib contusion. Happ suffered the injury in a collision with infielder Nico Hoerner in a loss Sunday and hasn’t played since. During an interview on the Bernstein & Rahimi Show on Friday morning, Happ indicated he was feeling better, but it was later determined that an IL stint was for the best. Happ’s placement on the IL is retroactive to Tuesday.
Happ is hitting .167 with two homers, four RBIs and a .557 OPS in 26 games this season.
In other moves, the Cubs designated reliever Kyle Ryan for assignment and recalled outfielder Nick Martini and reliever Jason Adam from Triple-A Iowa.
Ryan had a 3.38 ERA in three appearances for the Cubs this season after posting a 5.17 ERA in 2020. Martini hasn’t had a plate appearance in an MLB game since 2019. Adam has a 9.45 ERA in eight appearances this year.
