(Audacy) Dansby Swanson is the lone shortstop remaining of the four stars at the position who were available this offseason, and the Boston Red Sox continue to get linked to him.
After losing shortstop Xander Bogaerts to the San Diego Padres in free agecny, the Red Sox badly need to add in the infield. As of now, they’d likely be entering the season with Trevor Story at shortstop and Christian Arroyo at second base. With Bogaerts gone and both Trea Turner and Carlos Correa signed elsewhere, Boston's options are thinning.
Swanson could address that issue, and the Red Sox are "seriously considering" him in free agency, Jon Heyman of the New York Post and Audacy Sports reported Thursday.
Swanson might not have the track record Correa, Turner and Bogaerts have, but he's coming off his best season in the big leagues. He won a Gold Glove and made his first All-Star team in 2022, hitting .277 with 25 homers, 96 RBIs and a .776 OPS. He also played in every game this season and has a long track record of durability.
The Red Sox aren’t alone in needing a shortstop though -- the Cubs and others continue to pursue him -- and the shortstops who have signed before Swanson have helped set a high bar for him. Correa signed a 13-year, $350-million deal with the Giants, Turner signed an 11-year, $300-million with the Phillies and Bogaerts inked an 11-year, $280-million with the Padres.
