(670 The Score) Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner showcases himself as calm and composed on the field. But there's a competitive fire that burns within.
Hoerner harnesses that passion while playing these days but that wasn't the case when he was nine years old and committed a key error in the championship game of a little league tournament.
"I had a ball go right through my legs," Hoerner told the Parkins & Spiegel Show on Wednesday. "Just a classic through my legs, then the center fielder fell down and the winning run scored. Just a disaster, right? I remember it was the championship game, we lost, so we were going through the high-five lines. We had pins but (the winning team) had full gift bags, like a party favor, almost. I remember just taking it from the kid and throwing it as far as I could into center field, on the field. So, that probably wasn't my parents' proudest moment of me. Just hilarious to picture now. But, yeah, definitely a sore loss in my early days right there."
Hoerner, now 26, is hitting .271 this season in what's his fifth year with the Cubs. He signed a three-year contract extension with the team in March.
The Cubs return to play Friday when they host the Red Sox for a three-game series at Wrigley Field.
