(670 The Score) As Cubs radio play-by-play broadcaster Pat Hughes is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend as the 2023 recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award, this accomplishment has been celebrated by his peers around the game.
White Sox television analyst Steve Stone is among those who is thrilled for Hughes to enshrined in Cooperstown this weekend. A former colleague of Hughes’ with the Cubs, Stone shared that he still listens to his work and admires it from across town.
“I think it’s a wonderful honor and Pat richly deserves it,” Stone said to the Bernstein & Holmes Show on Friday. “He’s been doing this a long time in a lot of different places and doing it exceptionally well with the Cubs. I’ve worked with him, I’ve listened to him, I still listen to him. I think he does an outstanding job of painting the picture on radio, which is where most of the great broadcasters have made their bones, doing radio, because they believe it’s the purest form of broadcasting.
“Certainly, if you don’t have any pictures, you have to illustrate what’s going on on the field. Listening to Pat talk about big red numbers and blue socks, it’s really a nice, easy listen, because he does a terrific job of it. It’s richly deserved. You could’ve pretty much taken in any of those 10 that were on the final list and you wouldn’t have been wrong. Pat is one of those guys that probably was in line for this for a long time. It’s nice to see him go in.”
Stone was also a finalist for the Ford C. Frick Award this year. Hughes will become the fourth Chicago sports broadcast to be enshrined for this award, joining Harry Caray, Jack Brickhouse and Ken “Hawk” Harrelson.
670 The Score will celebrate Hughes’ induction with a special Friday night at 6 p.m. CT: “Pat’s Call to the Hall,” hosted by his partners Ron Coomer and Zach Zaidman.
