Chris Getz, White Sox are in no rush to hire a manager

CHICAGO (670 The Score) – With the White Sox on pace to set an MLB record for losses in a single season, general manager Chris Getz isn’t in a rush to find his new manager for 2025.

Getz fired manager Pedro Grifol on Aug. 8 and installed Grady Sizemore as the interim manager. At that time, Getz indicated no one currently in the White Sox organization would be under consideration for the full-time job, as he wanted to look externally for a new voice.

Sizemore, 42, has embraced the job despite the proclamation he wouldn’t be in the running to land the permanent role. The White Sox have fared no better record-wise under Sizemore than they did Grifol, though they’ve seemed to be a more relaxed group.

The White Sox were 28-89 when Grifol was fired. They’ve gone 5-23 since then under Sizemore’s guidance. Entering play Tuesday, the White Sox are 33-112, which is a .228 winning percentage. The 1962 Mets hold the record for the most losses in an MLB season, going 40-120 in a 160-game schedule.

The White Sox need to go 10-7 down the stretch to avoid setting the record for futility. If they go 9-8, they'd match the 1962 Mets with 120 losses. Anything worse than that, the White Sox would set the standalone mark.

With three weeks left in the season, Getz on Monday explained the timing of his search for the next manager.

“We haven't begun the permission process yet,” Getz said. “We have built out a process that we feel very good about. Simultaneously, we have collected a list of names that we feel very good about, the amount of candidates we have. Once we get our season to the end, we hope to begin our interview process.”

Getz was vague when asked what qualifications and traits he’ll be looking for in the next White Sox manager.

“It will be about understanding what is the best fit for the Chicago White Sox,” Getz said. “We need to use the right criteria to make a strong decision in the end. You start broad with the search and eventually work it down to the finalist and then make a decision from there.”

Current Marlins manager Skip Schumaker is expected to be a top target for the White Sox, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports previously reported. Schumaker and the Marlins have already agreed that he won’t return to his role in Miami for 2025.

Schumaker was the National League Manager of the Year in 2023 after leading the Marlins to a wild-card berth.

“There isn't a timeline to hire a new manager,” Getz said. “We will be respectful to other organizations and what they are trying to accomplish. Come October, we will have time to be more intentional on the interviews. We are not going to rush into anything and make sure we are as thorough as possible in this process.”

The White Sox recently parted ways with Marco Paddy, who had been in charge of their international operations for 12 years. So they’ll also be searching for his replacement. Four scouts were also recently informed that they won’t have their contracts renewed once they expire.
